The Directory of Research Groups in Brazil is an inventory of groups active in the country. The human resources that make up the groups, the lines of research and the sectors of activity involved, the specialties of knowledge, the scientific, technological and artistic production and the patterns of interaction with the productive sector are some of the information contained in the Directory. The groups are located in higher education institutions, research institutes, etc. The individual information of the participants in the groups is extracted from their Lattes Curricula.

Since 1992, the CNPq project has been developed in databases that contain information about research groups that are active in Brazil. The Directory maintains a current Base, whose information is continuously updated by the leaders of groups, researchers, students and Research leaders of the participating institutions, and CNPq conducts biannual Census, which are photographs of this current base.

The inventoried research groups are located in universities, isolated institutions of higher education, scientific research institutes, technological institutes, and research and development laboratories of state or ex-state enterprises. The surveys do not include the groups located in the companies of the productive sector.

Finally, the Directory of Institutions was designed to promote the organizations of the National S & T System to the status of users of the Lattes Platform. It registers any and all organizations or entities that establish some kind of relationship with CNPq (institutions in which students and researchers supported by CNPq carry out their activities; institutions where research groups are housed, users of services provided by the Agency, such as Accreditation for importation by Law 8.010 / 90, institutions that claim to participate in these programs and services, etc). The public availability of the Platform's data on the Internet gives greater transparency and more reliability to the promotion activities of CNPq and the agencies that use it, strengthen the exchange between researchers and institutions and is an inexhaustible source of information for studies and research. Insofar as their information is recurrent and cumulative, they also have the important role of preserving the memory of the research activity in the country.
